Text — The pharmacy at the crossroads
Every morning, a young man sets out a small table at the crossroads of Zogona. On it he arranges blister packs of tablets, bottles of syrup and boxes without labels. He calls out the names of the medicines as people pass, and business is good.
His customers are not foolish. They come to him because he is open at six in the morning, because he sells two tablets rather than a full box, and because he does not ask for a prescription. In a country where a consultation costs money and the pharmacy is often far away, these are real advantages.
The danger is invisible. Studies have shown that a significant proportion of the medicines sold in the street contain too little active substance, or none at all. Others have been stored for months in the sun, which destroys them. A patient who takes them feels no immediate effect, blames the illness rather than the tablet, and comes back for more.
The worst consequence is not the money wasted. When an antibiotic is taken at half the correct dose, the strongest bacteria survive and multiply. The disease returns, and this time the real medicine no longer works either.
