Text — The library on a bicycle

Adama's library has no walls. It has two wheels, a wooden box bolted over the back of a bicycle, and about ninety books, most of them second-hand.

Three afternoons a week he rides out to the villages around the town. Children hear the bell and come running. They may keep a book for a week; if they lose it, they are not asked to pay, because Adama decided early on that a child who owes money never comes back.

He was a teacher for twenty-two years. When he retired, he did not want to stop, but neither did he want a classroom again. « In a class, » he says, « they read because I tell them to. On the road, they read because they want the next one. »

He has lost eleven books in three years. He does not consider them lost. « Somebody is reading them, » he says. « That was the whole idea. »
