Text — The workshop that would not close
When the state technical college in the town closed its metalwork department, the machines were left to rust in a locked hall. Three former students asked for the key. They were refused twice. The third time, the headmaster gave in — on condition that they repair the machines themselves, at their own expense.
It took them eleven months. They cleaned the lathes, replaced two motors, rewound a third by hand, and made the missing parts on the machines they had already fixed. Nobody paid them. They lived on what they earned welding gates in the evening.
The workshop reopened as a private training centre. It now takes forty apprentices a year, and half of them are girls — something the old college never managed. The fee is deliberately low, and any apprentice who cannot pay works two afternoons a week instead.
« We were not trying to prove anything, » says one of the three. « We simply knew what those machines could do, and we could not bear to hear them being sold for scrap. »
a. Why were the machines locked away?
b. How did the three young men live while they were repairing them?
a. The headmaster agreed immediately.
b. Apprentices who cannot afford the fee are turned away.
