Text — The shop that kept a notebook

When Salimata opened her shop in Koudougou, she kept no accounts at all. Money came in, money went out, and at the end of the month she simply looked at what remained in the box. Some months she was pleased ; others she could not understand why so little was left.

A customer who taught bookkeeping at the secondary school suggested a notebook. One page for purchases, one page for sales, one page for what she took out for the family. Nothing more. It took her about ten minutes a day.

After three months, the notebook showed something she had never suspected. Two products she sold every day were in fact bringing her almost nothing, because she had bought them at a bad price. She stopped ordering them and used the money for stock that sold faster.

Her profit rose by a third within a year, although she was not selling more. « I had the information all along », she says. « I simply was not writing it down. »
