Text — The repair café

Every Saturday afternoon, in a courtyard behind the market of Koudougou, five men and two women sit under a mango tree with their tools. They do not sell anything. They repair.

People bring radios that no longer work, fans with broken blades, bicycles, sandals, plastic chairs. The repairers look at the object, explain what is wrong, and fix it if they can. They ask for nothing, but most customers leave a small sum or a bag of vegetables.

Ousséni started this two years ago. He was tired of seeing good objects thrown away because nobody knew how to open them. « A fan costs fifteen thousand francs », he says. « The part that breaks costs two hundred. »

The most important rule is that the owner must stay and watch. Nobody leaves an object and comes back later. « If I repair it while you drink tea somewhere else, you have learned nothing », Ousséni explains. « Next time, you will throw it away again. »
