Text — The school garden

Three years ago, the land behind the school of Sabou was empty. Nothing grew there except a few thorny bushes, and the pupils used it to play football when it was not too hot.

Then a new teacher arrived. Mr Zongo had studied agriculture before becoming a teacher, and he asked the headmaster for permission to start a garden. The headmaster agreed, but he warned him: « Nobody will water it during the holidays. »

Mr Zongo solved the problem in a simple way. He asked ten families living near the school to take care of the garden during the holidays. In exchange, they could keep half of the vegetables they harvested. Everyone accepted.

Today the garden produces onions, tomatoes and lettuce. The pupils learn how to prepare a bed, how to water and how to fight insects without chemicals. The vegetables are cooked in the school canteen, and the children eat better than before. « They also eat what they have grown themselves », says Mr Zongo. « That changes everything. »
