Text: The Saturday library
There is no library in our village. The nearest one is in town, thirty kilometres away, and it closes at four o'clock — long before anybody can walk there and back.
Two years ago, our English teacher had an idea. Every Saturday morning, she opens her own classroom and puts her books on the tables. Anyone may come and read. Nobody pays anything. The only rule is that you must return the book you borrow before the next Saturday.
At first, only five pupils came. Today there are more than sixty, and some of them are not even at school: mothers come with their children, and old Boureima, who learned to read at forty, always sits in the same corner.
The books are old and the shelves are made of empty boxes. But last year, four pupils from our village passed the BEPC with distinction. Three of them had spent every Saturday in that classroom.
Our teacher never says that the library is the reason. She only smiles and says: « A book that nobody opens is just paper. »
