Text: The School Garden
My name is Fatimata. I am fourteen years old and I live in a village near Kaya. Last year, our teacher started a garden behind the school. At first, we did not understand why. We wanted to play football, not to carry water.
Every morning, before the first lesson, we water the tomatoes and the onions. In February, we sold our first harvest at the market. With the money, the school bought thirty new books for the library.
Now nobody complains. My little brother waters the plants without being asked. Our teacher says that a garden teaches more than science: it teaches patience.
Next year, we want to plant mango trees. Trees grow slowly, but they give shade to everyone — even to the children who have not planted them.
