Text — Market day in Gorom-Gorom
Every Thursday, the small town of Gorom-Gorom wakes up before sunrise. Traders arrive from villages that are forty or fifty kilometres away, some on motorbikes, others walking beside their donkeys. By seven o'clock the square is already full.
Aminata sells dried fish. She has kept the same place for eleven years, under an old tree, and her customers know exactly where to find her. She says the tree is worth more than any advertisement.
The market is not only about money. People come to hear the news, to arrange marriages, to settle small disagreements. A young man who wants to borrow a cart will find its owner here more easily than at his house.
In the late afternoon, the square empties quickly. The traders count what they have earned, load what they have not sold, and start the long journey home. Next Thursday, they will all be here again.
