Text — The workshop and the classroom
For years, technical schools were considered a second choice. Parents wanted their children to study law or medicine, and a boy who entered a workshop was often thought to have failed somewhere else. Today that idea is slowly changing, and not because of speeches.
The reason is simple. Companies cannot find the people they need. A firm may wait months for a qualified welder, an electrician who can read a wiring diagram, or a mechanic able to service modern engines. Meanwhile, thousands of graduates with general degrees are looking for work. The market has sent a clear message.
Good technical training, however, is expensive. It requires machines, materials, safety equipment and teachers who have actually worked in industry. A school that teaches electricity on a blackboard produces students who have never touched a cable. This is the real difficulty: not convincing families, but paying for workshops.
Some countries have solved the problem by bringing companies into the system. Students spend part of the year in a firm and part in school, and the firm helps to pay for the training because it will employ them afterwards. Nobody is doing anyone a favour: each side gains something.
